A white man who goes by the name of Ja Du (formerly known as Adam) is claiming that he is ‘transracial’ and identifies as Filipino. He rides around in a hot pink vehicle called a tuk-tuk, which he claims is what they use to get around in the Philippines. See below for a screenshot of the video of his interview here. To clarify, tuk-tuk originates in Thailand, NOT the Philippines. The correct term for this type of vehicle would be “tricycle.”
This has Rachel Dolezal written all over it. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, she is the woman of Caucasian descent who blatantly lied about being black and was the former president of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) chapter in Spokane, WA.
In a world where the boundaries of inclusivity are seemingly endless, the term ‘transracial’ has found its home. According to WSTP, “it refers to someone born one race, but identifies with another.”
Having said that, as a Fil-Am woman, I truly can’t quite wrap my head around this man’s plight nor empathize with it. What are your thoughts? Is Ja Du, formerly known as Adam, 100% entitled to claim a new, Filipino identity? Or do you disagree*?
